FAQ

Q1: What is TPU?

Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is a thermoplastic elastomer that combines rubber-like flexibility and elasticity with the processing advantages of conventional thermoplastics.

Unlike thermoset rubber, TPU can be softened by heat and processed using common thermoplastic manufacturing methods such as injection molding and extrusion.

TPU belongs to the thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) family, together with materials such as TPS, TPEE, TPV, TPO, and TPA. Its combination of mechanical strength, flexibility, abrasion resistance, and processability makes it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.

Q2: What does the "bio-based content" of LARIPUR® RS mean?

Bio-based content refers to the portion of the material derived from renewable-source feedstocks rather than recycled material.

Depending on the grade, LARIPUR® RS offers approximately 35% to 75% bio-based content.

The materials can generally be processed using conventional TPU injection molding or extrusion equipment. Actual processing parameters should always be optimized according to the selected grade, equipment, tooling, and application.

LARIPUR® RS is designed to deliver physical and mechanical performance comparable to conventional fossil-based TPU. Please contact HTChem for the latest TDS and grade-specific performance data.

Q3: Is LARIPUR® RS made from recycled material?

No. Bio-based content and recycled content are different concepts.

LARIPUR® RS is primarily a bio-based TPU range in which part of the conventional fossil-derived raw materials is replaced with materials derived from renewable sources.

As a thermoplastic material, TPU may also be reprocessed or recycled under suitable conditions. However, actual recyclability depends on the finished product design, additives, contamination, processing history, and available recycling process.

Q4: Are other LARIPUR® grades and applications available?

Yes. LARIPUR® is a broad family of TPU materials covering a wide range of hardness levels, polymer chemistries, processing methods, and end-use applications.

Examples include:

Plasticized Polyester TPU: Soft and flexible grades developed for injection molding while maintaining good abrasion resistance and physical properties. Phthalate-free options are also available.

Standard Polyester TPU: Grades offering excellent rebound, tear strength, and abrasion resistance for general injection-molding applications.

Special Polyester TPU: Grades developed for injection molding and extrusion applications such as tubing, films, and sheets, with improved hydrolysis resistance and low-temperature flexibility.

Polycaprolactone-Based TPU: TPU grades combining excellent mechanical properties, hydrolytic-aging resistance, and low-temperature flexibility.

Modified Polyester TPU: Specializedgrades combining higher hardness with improved low-temperature performance.

Application-Specific Grades: Specialized TPU formulations developed for specific market, processing, or customer requirements.
